LOOM: The Making of an Irish Wool Economy

A 2026–27 research and networking initiative by Wear the Land Collective

LOOM focuses on the economic and structural barriers limiting Irish wool farmers’ access to viable markets. By examining how wool moves from farm to textile production, the project will investigate where supply-chain constraints arise and how industry practices and public policy shape the opportunities available to farmers.

Currently in its early stages, LOOM is focused on developing its research, engaging with industry participants across the sector, and establishing the foundations for a report with evidence-backed recommendations to improve market access and support the long-term viability of Irish-grown wool.

What We're Investigating

What economic, supply-chain, and policy barriers limit Irish wool farmers’ access to viable markets, and what changes could help them secure a more reliable return for the wool they produce?

The Economics of Wool Production

We will examine the economics of wool production at farm level, focusing on the relationship between shearing costs, prices received, and the arrangements through which farmers sell their wool. We plan to conduct farmer interviews, wide-scale surveys and available industry data to provide provide the basis for this analysis.

Wool Processing Infrastructure

A directory and map of collection points, scouring facilities, spinners and other processors will document existing capacity and accessibility. Information on processing costs, capabilities and requirements will help identify where infrastructure limits the movement of wool through the supply chain.

Market Access & Demand

Conversations with buyers, processors and textile businesses will explore the practical and economic considerations behind those decisions, including price, quality, volume and consistency of supply. This evidence, considered alongside existing market research, will help assess opportunities for Irish-grown wool.

Policy Proposal

A review of existing policy, sector reports and industry support will establish how Irish wool production and processing are currently supported, and where gaps remain. This will be considered alongside findings from farmer and industry engagement to identify potential policy changes and put together a proposal aiming to improve farmers’ access to viable markets.

Contribute to LOOM

A meaningful understanding of Irish wool requires input from the people who produce, process, manufacture, and use it.

We welcome engagement from sheep farmers, wool buyers, scouring and processing facilities, spinners, textile manufacturers, designers, retailers, industry bodies, and others with knowledge of the sector.
